Hotel Columbia Team Members

Kate Stokes

Kate Stokes - General Manager

Hailing from Michigan, Kate has always had a desire for adventure and to spend as much time possible outdoors. Before arriving in Telluride, she led bicycle tours with Backroads. Now as the General Manager of the hotel, she brings poise and polish to the role and treats guests like family. She enjoys hiking, biking, and skiing and will help you experience Telluride like a local.

Edward Bills HC

Edward Bills - Assistant General Manager

After visiting Telluride many times over the years, Edward finally made the decision to live out his dreams and make the move from Chicago in September of 2018. Edward has a passion for hospitality and had been in the industry since his college days. He is an avid sports fan and follows the Blackhawks and White Sox passionately.

Michael Battey - Hotel Columbia

Michael Battey - Front Desk Supervisor

Michael was born in Washington D.C. and moved to Colorado in 2004, where he graduated from Colorado State University. Michael is very passionate and knowledgeable about his family, Phish, football, snowboarding and cheeseburgers. He has lived in Telluride since 2009 with his wife, Lea, and his two cats, Copper and Leroy. Michael’s favorite season in Telluride is still winter.

Jakob De Witt-Hoeger

Jakob De Witt-Hoeger - Concierge

A childhood split between the blue waters of Redondo Beach, CA and sub-thermal walk-to-schools in Minneapolis, Jakob is one who appreciates contradiction. Whether it’s competing in All-American Tennis Tournaments as a collegiate captain or singing tenor in the college choir, Jakob considers himself a culture vulture in pursuit of interests in odd places. A music lover— a self-titled (ugh) “connoisseur of intellectual slackerism”—ask him about what he's listening to, reading, or who he's following on Twitter, and unlike most things, he'll always have an answer.

Tom Mackowiak

Tom Mackowiak - Concierge

Tom is from upstate New York, where he graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2015 before moving to Telluride. When he is not working he enjoys skiing, hiking and many other outdoor activities.

Rico Garner

Rico Garner - Breakfast Attendant

Rico moved to Telluride in the '60s and never looked back. He loves walking his bulldog, Smudge, on the trails and sidewalks around town. Rico is a huge Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan. His favorite time of year in Telluride is the Fall.

Linda and Fred Shapiro - Breakfast Attendants

Fred discovered the town of Telluride while backpacking through the San Juan Mountains in the mid-'70s. He and Linda visited often since then and brought their two young daughters back to experience the little mountain town. They were some of the first guests to stay at the Hotel Columbia upon opening.  Once their girls were grown, Fred and Linda started to spend more time in Telluride and eventually made it their full-time home. Together they enjoy skiing, hiking and entertaining friends and family at their ranch.
